ARCHEOLOGY- Julius Caesar, Caligula, and Diana on the Shores of Lake Nemi: A lecture by Dr. Irene Bald RomanoDr. Romano presented an illustrated talk about the excavation of a Roman Villa at Lake Nemi in the Alban Hills south of Rome. The very well attended one hour lecture, which showed how scientific methodologies had been used in Dr. Romano's research at Lake Nemi, was followed by an an enthusiastic additional hour-long question and answer session and a reception.
The program was presented by the Institute in collaboration with SMATCH.
Collaborating with the Nordic Institutes in Rome, Dr. Romano served as Director of an American team at the Lake Nemi villa in the Grove of Diana. The role of the American team was to shed light on the Villa's extensive gardens. The Villa's owners included Julius Caesar and the Emperor Caligula.
Dr. Romano was Coordinator and Co-curator of the new Classical Galleries which opened last March at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. She is a Research Fellow of the University of Pennsylvania Museum where she has held positions including Registrar, Coordinator of Exhibits, and Consulting Curator for the Greek World Gallery. Currently, she is writing a monograph on the Museum's Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculpture collection. Dr. Romano is a specialist in Greek cult practices, Greek and Roman sculpture, terracotta figurines, and Hellenistic pottery, the subjects of her three books and numerous articles. Since receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania is 1980, she has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Franklin and Marshall College. In addition to her most recent work at the excavations at Lake Nemi, Dr. Romano has participated in archaeological field work in Spain, Greece, Turkey, and other sites in Italy.
