Methodologies employed to synthesize and treat gemological materials (or used in similar areas, such as mural painting). Color enhancement is one of the main treatments, in particular for diamonds, as it can increase the value of a gemstone.
Non-destructive analytical methods that can be used regardless of a gemstone's shape or size (as when mounted in jewelry) to identify lower cost imitations, determine a stone's synthetic or natural origin, and recognize possible treatments to which it has been subjected. Materials of the same chemical composition can show significantly different physical properties if synthesized or treated under different conditions.
The latest techniques used for measuring optical properties: light that is absorbed or emitted by an object can provide clues about its structure and chemical composition. Therefore, It also can help to determine a mineral's origin or tell us something about its synthesis.
How a scientific approach to gem market issues requires rigorous control in all phases of production -- from the emergence of rough to commercialization of finished product -- will assist the trade.
How testing techniques wil help regulate and prevent fraud: the issue of treated or synthetic gemstones should not be seen solely in terms of problems to be resolved but also in its presentation of cultural and production opportunities.
